A DARK ROSE pirate sends some fire down range while defending the in-town areas during the 2011 Damariscotta River Pirate Rendezvous.

ROCKPORT — A pirate crew based in the Mid-coast region — complete with sailing vessel and cannon — is casting about for new buccaneers.

Individuals interested in signing on with the Pirates of the Dark Rose can attend a recruitment and orientation meeting at 1 p.m. Sunday at 122 Camden St., Rockport.

Members of the scurvy band will demonstrate how to shoot a flintlock, swing a cutlass, fire a cannon and other piratical skills.

“We’ll be settin’ off ta plunder an’ pillage at festivals and benefits from Key West, Fla., ta Eastport, Maine, this season,” said Capt. Crudbeard (Tomm Tomlinson of Rockport), leader of the pirate crew.

The Pirates of the Dark Rose perform at the Pirate Days at Fort Knox, Richmond Days, Windjammer Days in Camden and the Pirate Rendezvous in Damariscotta.

“Pirates of the Dark Rose performers do everything from pirate songs, to hand-tohand cutlass combat, to naval cannon fire from their 55-foot topsail yawl S/V Must Roos,” a release from the group states. “They also use field artillery pieces on shore, and have members trained to fire historic firearms. Last, but not least, singers and musicians are also invited to join the crew.”
