BRUNSWICK — A 49-year-old Bowdoin woman received a civil summons on Wednesday after her miniature Australian Shepherd bit a Brunswick police officer on the leg.

Julie Hersom, 49, of 1218 Litchfield Road, Bowdoin, was issued a civil summons for having a dog at large, Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department said Monday.

Brunswick Police Officer Julia Gillespie was patrolling on a bicycle along the Androscoggin River Bicycle and Pedestrian Path near Water Street when she saw someone throw a Frisbee. Gillespie rode over to tell the person that her dog should be on a leash, Hagan said.

When the dog approached, Gillespie placed her bike between herself, the dog and Hersom, but the dog skirted the bike and bit Gillespie on the knee, puncturing her pants but only scratching her knee.

Gillespie did not require medical treatment for the bite.
