BRUNSWICK — Artist Karl Saila and woodturner Peter Asselyn will open an exhibit Thursday at Thornton Oaks, 25 Thornton Way.

Saila of Brunswick and Asselyn of Durham will discuss their work between 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. A reception for the artists will run from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Both retired, the pair “have followed diverging paths to fulfill their artistic yearnings,” a Thornton Oaks release states.

“Saila’s interest in drawing began early with profile sketching of his grade school classmates,” the release states. “Self-taught, he later moved to watercolors and acrylics. He credits the influence of his father, an architect and the advice of his aunt, a career artist, with encouraging him to develop his own technique. As an engineer, he likes realism.”

“I am still only beginning to achieve the flow and freeness in expressions that artists must have; my technical training anchors me,” he said in the release.

Asselyn has been working with wood “ever since I could walk, building houses with my dad, and the love for wood has been with me ever since.”

Since retiring, “I am becoming known as the burl guy because my passion is cherry burl,” he said in a release. “Mother Nature is the artist, I am the acolyte. I use mostly local wood from friends and neighbors.”
