BATH — Registration begins Tuesday for Patten Free Library’s “Let’s Talk About It” summer reading and discussion group about the Civil War.

Titled “Making Sense of the Civil War,” the program is provided by the Maine Humanities Council’s Maine Center for the Book, in cooperation with the Maine State Library. The Bath Historical Society and Midcoast Senior College are local collaborators.

“This new series is designed as a succession of five conversations exploring different facets of the Civil War experience, informed by reading the words written or spoken by powerful voices from the past and present,” a Patten Free Library release states.

Each session will explore a different topic. Books to be read in this series include: “March,” by Geraldine Brooks; “America’s War,” edited by Edward Ayers; and “Crossroads to Freedom: Antietam,” by James McPherson.

Discussions will be facilitated by history scholar and Civil War re-enactor Charles Plummer, a faculty member at Midcoast Senior College.

The series begins at 3 p.m. June 13 at Patten Free Library on Summer Street. Sessions will meet every other Wednesday through Aug. 8.

Books for the program are available for loan at the library. Call 443-5141 extension, 12 to register. Registration is limited to 25 people.
