GEORGETOWN — More than 60 paintings found during cleaning at Jason Schoener’s homestead will be on view and for sale at the West Island Gallery from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday.

Many of the paintings date to the 1940s.

Schoener was born in 1919. His uncle was William Zorach, the well-known sculptor from Georgetown.

As a teenager, Schoener spent time on his uncle’s farm in Robinhood, painting with his cousin, Dahlov Ipcar. In 1944 and 1945, he was stationed at Eniwetok Atoll as a Navy ensign and completed many watercolors depicting the life of a sailor.

In the 1950s, Schoener returned to Maine and bought the Washington Heal Farm, where he painted every summer for more than 40 years.

Schoener, who died in 1997, taught for more than 40 years at the California College of Arts and Crafts, retiring in 1987. As a painter and an educator, Schoener traveled extensively and painted many scenes along the way. He divided his time between California and Georgetown, painting both. He worked primarily in oils, watercolor and gouache.

West Island Gallery is located at 37 Bay Point Road. For more information, call Susie Westly Wren at 371-9106 or visit the gallery website at www.westislandgallery.com.
