In observance of National Historic Preservation Month, the Brunswick Village Review Board is sponsoring a photo series in The Times Record highlighting some of Brunswick’s hidden gems — parts of the town’s built environment that are architecturally or historically important, even if their significance is not immediately obvious. Today’s photo is third in the series. The First Parish Church cemetery is located on upper Maine Street at the foot of Pleasant Hill Road. The church, one of Maine’s oldest congregations, was founded in 1717. The cemetery is located next to the site of the original Meeting House, which was completed in 1735. The congregation moved into town in 1806 after the founding of Bowdoin College so students could attend required Sunday services there. In 2000, the First Parish Church congregation installed a memorial garden in the corner of the old cemetery to commemorate parishioners whose ashes are interred there. (Emily Swan photo)
