AUBURN (AP) — A Turner man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for fatally shooting his wife because he thought she was having an affair.
Brian Nichols apologized and asked for forgiveness in Androscoggin County Superior Court on Thursday for killing Jane Tetreault in their Turner home in May 2010. He pleaded guilty last month.
The Sun Journal reports the couple’s 18-year-old son seemed unwilling to forgive, saying he hated his father and hoped he would die in prison.
The 47-year-old Nichols told investigators that he killed his 38-year-old wife because he suspected her of cheating. Police said an investigation turned up no evidence of infidelity.
Nichols’ lawyer said his client had a history of mental illness, but prosecutors say the murder was premeditated.
