PORTLAND — Portland International Jetport continues to offer some of the region’s most affordable airfares, according to new data released by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The data compared average one-way airfares from Portland and Boston’s Logan International Airport and was based on airfare rates for domestic and international travel from both airports during 2011.
A summary of Portland’s airfares compared to Boston shows (2011 average one-way airfares):
— Boston, $217
— Portland, $191
The U.S Department of Transportation data supports a 2011 Cheapflights.com study that named Portland the region’s most affordable airport for domestic and international travel. Portland International Jetport ranked first in the region, third in New England, and 49th in the country.
“We are committed to delivering the best service to the traveling public, and the release of this latest airfare data confirms that Portland delivers exceptional value to its passengers,” said Paul Bradbury, Portland’s airport director.
“What the survey doesn’t show are the extra savings which can be gained by using your local airport — savings on tolls, gas, higher on-airport parking rates, and, of course, the cost of your time driving up to four hours round-trip to other airports. In addition, we will soon be announcing additional flights to several cities to and from Portland, Maine, so it’s a great time to fly Portland, plus it’s very convenient,” continued Bradbury.
