BATH — Morse High School Principal Peter Kahl announces the top ten seniors in the class of 2012.

Valedictorian Maxwell Rawson of Bath is the son of David Rawson and Karen Freedman. He was voted DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) Good Citizen and received the Dartmouth Book Award. Rawson participated in varsity soccer, basketball and lacrosse, and played saxophone in the jazz band and jazz combo. He was president of the Student Community Liaison Committee (SCLC). Among his other activities, Rawson conducted environmental science research projects at a Woolwich estuary, counseled at an outdoor youth leadership camp and enjoys skiing and rock-climbing. He is employed at Robinhood Marina in Georgetown, and plans to study natural science at Colorado College.

Salutatorian Leigh Mathieu of Bath is the daughter of John and Stacey Mathieu. Mathieu received the Rensselaer Medal for outstanding achievement in French, biology and music theory. She participated on the varsity lacrosse team, Ocean Bowl, Model United Nations, Interact Club and RYLA. She was a soloist in the jazz band and jazz combo, and was named judge’s choice at the jazz festival. Nordic skiing, playing the flute and hanging out with her cat are favorite pastimes. She volunteers at Androscoggin Animal Hospital, and plans to study biology at Colby College, hoping to become a doctor, veterinarian or researcher.

Elizabeth Young of Woolwich, daughter of Kathryn Wetzel Young and Mark Young, is the first honor essayist. Young received the Maine Principals’ Association Principal’s Award and the Yale and Smith Book Awards. She participated in tennis and swimming, was a member of the SCLC and president of the National Honor Society. She enjoys reading, playing violin and spending time with friends and family. Young is employed at McDonald’s. She plans to attend college in the fall to study biomedical engineering.

Second honor essayist Hannah Leeman, the daughter of Daniel and Barbara Leeman of Bath, received the Phi Beta Kappa Academic Award and was selected as a Super Teen by Next Step magazine. She was a member of the lacrosse, swim and field hockey teams. Leeman served as the captain of Morse High School’s Ocean Bowl Team and the student representative on regional school unit’s School Advisory Group. She was a member of the SCLC and the Interact Club, and tutors peers and elementary school students. Leeman student teaches at an after school religious program and volunteers at the Bath Animal Hospital and Mid Coast Hospital. She is employed by the Bounty Restaurant. Leeman enjoys SCUBA diving and working with ceramics. She plans to attend Brandeis University to study science and public health, and hopes to become a pediatrician.

Kerry Cummings, daughter of Mark Cummings of Westport Island, is the third honor essayist. Cummings played varsity soccer, basketball and track, and received the St. Michael’s Book Award.

Cummings worked to raise money for the Fields for Our Future project and with the National Honor Society for cystic fibrosis. She refereed for youth soccer and basketball, and for the past four summers worked at the Chewonki Foundation. Cummings enjoys skiing, spending time with family and friends, boating and watching movies. She plans to study biology at college in the fall, and to eventually pursue sports medicine as a career.

Kai Whitehead is the son of Carla and Harris Whitehead of Bath. He played lacrosse and soccer, and participated in mixed choir. Whitehead volunteered as an usher and selling concessions at the Chocolate Church, and raised money for cystic fibrosis and trail maintenance at Thorne’s Head. He enjoys sailing, skiing, snowboarding, reading and listening to music. Whitehead plans to study mechanical engineering at college in the fall.

Shannon Rice is the daughter of Thomas and Julie Rice of Bath. She received the Williams College Book Award and participated on the swim, field hockey and lacrosse teams. Rice volunteered as a field hockey coach for the Bath Recreation Department and for the “Plant a Row for the Hungry” garden. She is employed by Now You’re Cooking and Pierce Atwood law firm. She enjoys art, music, sailing, biking and being outdoors. She plans to study engineering at either Worcester Polytechnic Institute or Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where she hopes to play field hockey and lacrosse.

Jamie Emerson is the daughter of Kenneth and Janet Emerson of Bath. Emerson received academic awards in history and art, played in the band and managed the girl’s lacrosse team statistics. She volunteers at Coastal Humane Society and enjoys playing video games, drawing and playing with her cats. She plans to study game design at Southern New Hampshire University and hopes to own her own game development company.

Brianna Bigelow, the daughter of Nancy and Earl Bigelow of Bath, received the Mt. Holyoke Book Award and various academic awards. She played varsity basketball, soccer and softball, and is vice president of the National Honor Society. Bigelow has volunteered at the Bath Recreation Department, Coastal Humane Society, bake sales and through peer tutoring. She is employed at Broadway Deli. She enjoys SCUBA diving in the Kennebec River and performing music with her father. She plans to study journalism and communications at Emerson College, and hopes to write for the New York Times.

Kathryn Henrikson is the daughter of Kris and Kathy Henrikson of Bath. She received the Wellesley Book Award as well as a number of academic awards. She volunteers at Dike-Newell School and is employed by Mae’s Café. Henrikson played soccer, basketball, lacrosse and softball. She enjoys sitting in the pool during the summer and by the coal stove in the winter. Henrikson plans to attend Wheaton College.
