AUGUSTA — During his lifetime, David Caron of Lewiston kept nearly every Maine driver’s license that had been issued to him.

Now, the state is going to put on public display that vintage collection, which illustrates the evolution of the most common credential Mainers carry. Today, Secretary of State Charlie Summers will unveil the timeline history to go on display at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles office in Lewiston.

The idea started after Marcel Caron of Auburn contacted the state and said he’d found the licenses his late grandfather, David Caron, had saved through the years. Marcel Caron wanted to know if the state would like them back and if it was possible to use them for something special.

The state archive created a timeline using the licenses.
