WISCASSET — U.S. Coast Guard Flotilla 25 will offer three boating courses at the Wiscasset EMA Center.
“These classes aren’t just for skippers. They are very useful for anyone who ventures out on the water,” a release from the flotilla states.
The courses are as follows:
— Suddenly in Command: Boating problems and emergencies can occur, and passengers or casual boaters might find themselves suddenly in command. How can a boater get help? How can a boater get to shore? What can be done if boating mishaps arise?
This course covers essential boating information about what to do in these situations. Topics include things to know before departing and while under way and what to do in emergencies.
The session runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
— Navigating Mid-Coast Maine: The class is an introduction to navigation using a chart of the Boothbay area. Participants will be shown how to read a chart and become familiar with the coastal waters between Small Point and Pemaquid.
Problem sets will help plan cruises of the area and understand the information associated with aids to navigation (buoys and lights).
Skills covered in the class can be applied to reading and understanding all U.S. nautical charts and GPS chartplotter displays.
Topics include true and magnetic headings, variation, lines of position, chart symbols, piloting, latitude and longitude, dead reckoning, and aids to navigation. Course materials include the Three Rivers chart (13293) and a copy of a chapter on navigation principles.
A parallel ruler and dividers are needed and can be purchased separately.
Sessions run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 3, 5, 10 and 12.
— About Boating Safely: An introduction to boating, topics covered include types of boats, trailering, required safety equipment, legal requirements, navigating waterways, safe operation, boating emergencies, and water sports.
The course is approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. Successful completion of an optional exam at the end of the class leads to a certificate, which is required to operate a boat in most states and Canada. Many boat insurance companies offer discounts on boating insurance to those who have a certificate.
Sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 7 and 14.
