CAMDEN — Terra Diddle Collective, a theater troupe since 2009, plans to stage a reinvented production of its 2011 work “The Earth Maiden” at the Camden Library’s amphitheater at 6 p.m. Thursday and June 29.
“This piece has been evolving for over a year, growing and changing with each performance and performer,” Kathryn Oliver, the group’s artistic director, said in a release. “New scenes were born and developed in workshop this spring; new characters, puppets and costumes created. It’s a work in progress. … A circus scene adds to the visual and imaginative staging, with fire juggling and clowning. A special finale includes the entrance of the goddess puppet on a boat in the harbor.”
Terra Diddle Collective’s process engages local children, led by professional actor, choreographer and musician Kristi Williamson, in an after-school workshop to develop its original plays.
Children learn dance, songs and dialogue as well as help create scenery and costuming. After several weeks of training, the children join the professional actors, dancers and musicians of the adult cast.
“The Earth Maiden” tells the story of a “mythical place where a young maiden cares for the land and its people. When her people forget how to honor and care for the land, it grows fallow and they grow hungry. Tying together universal themes of love, redemption and earth stewardship, the story is brought to life through dance, music, bigger-than-life-size puppetry, and the performances of over 40 cast members.”
Tickets, which cost $10 for adults or $8 for children younger than 12, are available at the amphitheater an hour before each show. Bring a blanket or lawn chair.
