BOSTON (AP) — Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz has been voted as the starting designated hitter for the American League at the 2012 MLB All- Star Game.

Ortiz, 36, is having one of the best seasons of his career. He leads the team with 21 home runs and 53 RBIs, to go with a .305 batting average.

This will be Ortiz’s eighth appearance at the Mid-Summer Classic, and the first time as the team’s lone representative.

The last time the Red Sox had just one All-Star was 2001 when Manny Ramirez was on the squad.
