Gen. Joshua L. Chamberlain, third from left, attends the 1911 Bowdoin College commencement in Brunswick, along with Kate Douglas Wiggin, author of “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm,” on the far right. Wiggin was only the second woman to receive an honorary degree at Bowdoin, after fellow author Sarah Orne Jewett. Though Chamberlain is credited as the first to suggest Bowdoin become co-educational, the college would not admit women until 1971, according to the Pejepscot Historical Society. The society’s walking tour series will continue at 1 p.m. Sunday, when Dean Clegg will lead a tour of the Bowdoin College campus and explain the life-long relationship between the college and Chamberlain, who was not only a student at the school but later professor and president of his alma mater. The tour will begin at the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum, 226 Maine St., Brunswick. Admission is $2 in advance, $4 on the day of the tour, and free for PHS members. Space is limited; call 729-6606 to register. For a complete list of Pejepscot Historical Society summer walking tours, visit www.pejepscothistorical.org.
