BRUNSWICK

The National Civil War Museum of Harrisburg, Pa., has published its first book, focused on the letters of Maine native and Civil War Union Gen. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.

The letters span from Chamberlain’s youth and the courtship of his future wife through his election as governor of Maine and president of Bowdoin College.

The book includes 270 letters to and from Chamberlain that have never been published.

Among the highlights, according to a release about the book, are an account of the battle of Fredericksburg and love letters written to his future wife.

The book is edited by Thomas Desjardin, a former archivist and historian at the Gettysburg National Military Park and former professor at Bowdoin College, where he taught Civil War history.

The book is available through the National Civil War museum website at http://goo.gl/c5Kbu.
