BATH — Midcoast Senior College presented the 2012 Wheeler-Thompson Award to Dennis Unger, director of University College of Bath- Brunswick.

Unger accepted the award during Midcoast Senior College’s annual luncheon.

The Wheeler-Thompson Award was created in 2009 to honor two primary founders of Midcoast Senior College, Nancy Wheeler and Jack Thompson. The award is given to “individuals who have supported the spirit and work of the Senior College in significant ways,” a Midcoast Senior College release states.

The University College of Bath/Brunswick has hosted Senior College at the Bath campus for the past 12 years and “supported us as we have grown in countless ways,” the release states.

“Dennis has been insightful, enthusiastic and supportive,” Nancy Wheeler stated at the luncheon. “He has given us his wise counsel and unfailing attention to detail. Notably, he has assisted our effort to become technology savvy and this year to declare independence from the university system.”

As Unger accepted the award, he spoke movingly about the growth of Midcoast Senior College and the way the college has brought the “joy of learning” to seniors during the past 12 years.

Unger has been the director of University College at the Bath/Brunswick campus since January 2004. In that position he serves as a resource for current and prospective University of Maine students on issues of admission, financial aid, career development and academic advising.

From 1998 to 2003, he held the position of coordinator of services at the University College of Bath/Brunswick advising students with a comprehensive slate of student services.

Prior to coming to Maine, Unger served as associate dean of The Sage Colleges in Troy and Albany, N.Y.
