PORTLAND (AP) — A 23- year-old Biddeford man is going to prison for more than 18 years for shooting at U.S. marshals who tried to arrest him in January on a Portland street.

Arien L’Italien was sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Portland. L’Italien previously pleaded guilty to assaulting a federal officer, being a felon in possession of a gun and using a firearm during a crime of violence.

During the shootout, L’Italien fired four shots at marshals. They returned fire, striking him in the leg.

In sentencing L’Italien, U.S. District Court Judge Nancy Torresen cited his lengthy criminal record dating back to when he was 13.

Following the shootout, L’Italien made the news again when he sneaked out of his jail cell to have a tryst with a female inmate.
