PORTLAND — A fender bender that took place during the rush hour Thursday night on Interstate 295 in Portland caused traffic to back up for miles in both directions.

State Trooper Doug Cropper said the accident took place about 4:45 p.m. near Exit 7 northbound in Portland when a Nissan sports utility vehicle operated by 22-year-old Shauni Morrison of Lewiston swerved to avoid hitting a van that unexpectedly braked.

Cropper said Morrison swerved into the path of a Toyota Camry operated by 57-year-old Kathleen Cole of Freeport. No injuries were reported.

The crash caused traffic to back up in both directions for about an hour as southbound drivers “rubbernecked” and northbound drivers had no where else to get off the highway due to an ongoing construction project at the Forest Avenue overpass, Cropper said.
