LEWISTON — Nominations are now being accepted for the Amgen Breakaway from Cancer Survivor Award. Amgen, the title sponsor of the annual Dempsey Challenge, will present the award during Dempsey Challenge weekend on Oct. 13 and 14.

The criteria for nominees is as follows:

— Individual is a cancer survivor

— Individual lives and/or “helps others” in the Central Maine region

— Individual demonstrates passion for helping others diagnosed with cancer

— Individual is actively involved in community outreach

— Individual inspires others by a demonstrated passion

“Amgen created Breakaway from Cancer in 2005 with a mission to help connect cancer patients and their loved ones to support and resources, like those offered by the Dempsey Center,” Bob Azelby, vice president and general manager of Amgen Oncology, said in a news release.

The winner will play a significant role during the event weekend including sharing his or her story during opening ceremonies, leading cancer survivors and caregivers in the Amgen Breakaway from Cancer Survivor Walk and addressing top fundraisers and special guests at the Champions for Hope celebration.

“The Breakaway from Cancer Survivor Award recognizes the importance of survivors sharing their stories and strength with others who are impacted by cancer,” Aimee Arsenault, Dempsey Challenge event manager said in a news release. “Thanks to Amgen, we are able to honor these special individuals who work toward a goal that’s shared by the Dempsey Challenge — ensuring that no one is alone in their cancer journey.”

Nominations will be accepted until Friday.
