FALMOUTH – The Leighton Road bridge over the Maine Turnpike will close Tuesday for repair work.

The Maine Turnpike Authority said the bridge is expected to be closed through the end of October while crews fix abutments, piers, the concrete bridge deck and pavement.

The work was scheduled this week as soon as work on the Mountain Road bridge in Falmouth was completed.

Detours will direct drivers to use the Mountain Road bridge, via either Brook Road or Gray Road (Route 100).

Lane Construction Corp. is repairing both the Leighton Road and Mountain Road bridges under a $1 million contract. The work is part of a 30-year Turnpike Authority program of upgrading overpasses above the turnpike.

Most of the overpasses are at least 55 years old.

Updates on construction work and travel advisories can be obtained at maineturnpike.com or by following the Maine Turnpike on Facebook or Twitter.
