SOUTH PORTLAND — The Portland Water District is repairing two water main breaks in South Portland, one of which could cause significant traffic disruptions during the Friday morning commute.

Michelle Clements, spokeswoman for the Portland Water District, said the water main break in front of 724 Broadway probably won’t be fixed by Friday morning. Clements said a 12-inch water main at that location broke around 7 p.m. Thursday.

Clements said commuters may want to consider taking an alternate route. The break on Broadway caused some road damage and about 20 customers, including J. P. Thornton’s Cafe and Deli, lost water services Thursday night. The restaurant also sustained water damage.

A South Portland police dispatcher said a portion of the heavily traveled road had to be blocked off.

About two hours later, a water main on Hinckley Drive, which runs past Mill Creek Park, broke. Clements said she did not know when that break would be repaired.

Clements said it is not clear if the breaks are related.
