Children who attended have a new appreciation for geometry as they recognized how much it surrounds their lives in art, design, nature, sports, architecture, and more. Building shapes using toothpicks and gummies helped children analyze 2D and 3D shapes and their attributes.
Lower elementary children learned about fractions as they divided shapes into equal parts. They sorted 3D shapes in different ways, like those that roll and those that don’t roll. Younger children also studied the art piece, “Castle and Sun” by Paul Klee for inspiration as they designed their own castles using geometric shapes.
Upper elementary students compared lines and angles as well as practiced plotting points on coordinate planes. Working with formulas to find the area of triangles and rectangles and the volume of rectangular prisms were also addressed in this hands-on workshop.
These students applied their new geometric knowledge to construct a birdfeeder and calculate its capacity at the conclusion of the workshop. This captivating workshop, “Adventures in Geometry,” will be offered again in September.
