BATH — On Wednesday, Patten Free Library will be hosting the first of four weekly information sessions for local high school students and their families about getting into and paying for college.

All four sessions are free, open to the public, and will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the library’s second floor community room. No pre-registration is required.

This week’s session, “Defining the Good Fit,” is about how to research colleges that are a good match with students’ interests, scores, grades and extra-curricular activities. The session will be led by Leslie Trundy of Morse High School and Beverly Coleman of Hyde School.

On Sept. 26, “Testing, Testing … All About Testing,” will be led by Trundy and David Igmundson of Morse High School. They’ll provide an overview of the various standardized tests to consider taking during junior and senior years, and provide tips for preparing for the tests and improving scores.

On Oct. 3, the topic is “The Application Process and the College Essay.” Beth Caputi of College Compass and the Merriconeag Waldorf High School will share her expertise on navigating the Common Application website, putting together a strong high school profile for the application, and writing a winning college essay.

Finally, on Oct. 10, Jessica Whittier of the Finance Authority of Maine will lead the session on “Paying for College.” She will discuss the intricacies of filling out the Financial Aid Profile and FAFSA (the Free Application for Federal Student Aid) forms and talk about strategies for financing a college education.

“We are so pleased to partner with local school guidance counselors and faculty on this series,” says Roberta Jordan, an outreach and instruction librarian who has organized the workshops, “The college admissions process, as well as paying for college, has become increasingly complex and competitive in recent years. We hope that this series will help high school juniors and seniors and their families understand how to get through the process with minimal stress and maximum success.”
