Prescription drug drop-off

A prescription drug drop-off day, sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kennebunk Hannaford Supermarket on Route 1.

The purpose of the event is to properly dispose of unused and/or expired prescription medications that are potentially dangerous when flushed into the public water supply and thrown out, where they can get into the hands of children or used illegally.

The DEA, in collaboration with the Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, Southern Maine Medical Center, Coastal Healthy Communities Coalition, and the police departments of Biddeford, Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Old Orchard Beach and Saco, are partnering to receive the prescription drugs.

Individuals dropping off medications are asked to remove labels and any other identifying information prior to disposal.

Illegal substances and syringes will not be accepted.

Legos Club at library

Kennebunk Free Library will host a monthly Legos Club for children ages 6 and up beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Lego blocks will be provided and children are asked to leave their own Legos at home.

A day for the dogs

Woofminster 2012, the Planet Dog Foundation’s seventh annual outing for well-behaved dogs, will be held from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Camp Ketcha, 336 Black Point Road, routes 77 and 207.

The show will include lots of activities for dogs and dog lovers along with prizes awarded in categories such as Best Trick, Best Mixed Mutt and the Cover Dog Challenge and Best in Show.

Other activities at the event include musical dog beds, doggie limbo party, 100-paw dash, a scavenger hunt and bake sale. Local vendors, rescue groups and an agility demonstration are also included.

Bone-marrow registry

Maine Veterans’ Home will partner with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston to host a bone marrow registry drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at 290 Route 1.

The process of registering involves filling out paperwork and having one’s inner cheek swabbed to determine bone marrow compatibility and a potential match to participate in bone marrow transplant benefitting cancer patients.

Talk on Maine, slavery

Maine’s mixed reaction to slavery during the Civil War will be the subject of a talk at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Berwick Academy’s Jeppesen Science Center on Academy Street.

History teacher Brad Fletcher will examine Maine’s attitude and record toward slavery, as well as the way its politicians, journalists, citizens and soldiers helped shape and responded to Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

Extension educator Kathy Savoie, M.S., R.D., will head the workshops, teaching the latest methods for safely preparing, handling and serving food for large groups such as churches, club affiliation fundraisers and the like.

Working dog competition on tap

The New England Regional IPO Championship, a working dog competition, will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday at the Ballpark, directly behind the OOB Police Department parking lot, just off East Emerson Cummings Boulevard.

The United Schutzhund Clubs of America holds the yearly regional trials to determine which working dogs are most prepared to compete for national trials.

The Merrimack Valley Working Dog Club and the Maine Schutzhund Club are sponsoring this local event, open to New England dogs, typically including German shepherds, Mallinois, Dobermans and Bouviers.

Class on creating school gardens

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Cumberland and York counties will offer a five-part course geared for school teachers, staff and parents who want to create and maintain a school garden that will tie garden learning to the classroom and cafeteria.

Each of the five class sessions will focus on a particular garden subject including composting, soils, seedlings and garden planning.

Course participants will build an understanding of basic gardening principles; connect gardening principles to school activities and curriculum; and support the creation of school gardens with ideas and planning time.
