ORONO — Villanova sacked Maine quarterback Marcus Wasilewski seven times and held off a late Black Bears rally on the way to a 35-14 victory Saturday on a damp and chilly Morse Field.

It was the Colonial Athletic Association football opener for Maine (1-3). Villanova (4-1, 2-0) has won four in a row after opening the season with a loss to Philadephia crosstown rival Temple.

John Robertson, a redshirt freshman, has started each of the Villanova victories after initially losing a training camp quarterback battle.

Robertson guided the Wildcats to a five-play scoring drive on the first possession of the game and Villanova never trailed. He threw touchdown passes of 27 and 26 yards in the first quarter, then spent much  of the rest of the game handing off to Kevin Monangai, who ran for 192 yards and two touchdowns.

Maine answered Villanova’s opening score with a quick drive of its own, capped by Wasilewski’s 7-yard run. But that was all Maine could muster until Arthur Williams broke a screen pass into a 69-yard touchdown reception early in the fourth quarter.

The Black Bears drove deep into Villanova territory twice more, but each time turned the ball over on downs.

Maine plays out of state the next two weekends, first at Delaware and then at Towson, before returning to Orono Oct. 20 for the homecoming game against New Hampshire.
