The Harpswell-based nonprofit dog rescue organization Puppy Love Inc. raised $7,000 during a silent auction and fundraiser Sept. 22 at Orr’s Island Schoolhouse.

More than 100 people attended, from New Jersey, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and throughout Maine, organization President Laurie Blain said.

Puppy Love’s $375 adoption fee does not cover all the costs of treating dogs who become ill, Blain said. For example, a large dog treated for heartworm will result in a vet bill of $800.

“Turning our back on a rescued dog who has heartworm is unthinkable,” she said. “Sadly, heartworm is a preventable condition, and dogs who become infected are at risk of death when they undergo treatment.”

This past year Puppy Love treated 23 dogs for heartworm and 28 for parvovirus, Blain said.
