SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The University of Maine was held to 27 percent shooting overall and scored just 14 points in the second half Monday night on the way to a 44-40 women’s basketball loss at Bryant.

Maine (1-9) led for much of the first half, but Bryant (4-4) closed the half with a 9-1 run to take a 27-26 lead, then never trailed in the second half. Maine (1-9) had a chance to tie it in the closing seconds, but Ashleigh Roberts missed a jumper and Bryant’s Courtney Schissler clinched the victory with a pair of free throws.

Milica Mitrovic scored a career-high 12 points to pace the Black Bears, who have lost six straight. Fellow freshman Anna Heise finished with 10 points.


AP POLL: Stanford (8-0) remains No. 1 in The Associated Press poll, narrowly ahead of Connecticut (8-0).

The Cardinal had 22 first-place votes, while UConn received 16. Baylor (7-1) got the other two.

Duke (8-0) and Notre Dame (6-1) remain fourth and fifth.


(15) GEORGETOWN 89, LONGWOOD 53: Otto Porter scored a career-high 22 points and added seven assists and four rebounds as the Hoyas (8-1) beat the Lancers (2-8) at Washington.

AP POLL: Indiana is No. 1 for a sixth straight week in The Associated Press poll.

The Hoosiers (9-0) are again followed by Duke (9-0), Michigan (9-0) and Syracuse (8-0). Indiana received 44 first-place votes from the 64-member national media panel. Duke again drew the other No. 1 votes.


WESTERN KENTUCKY: The Hilltoppers hired Bobby Petrino, who was fired by Arkansas in April for a “pattern of misleading” behavior following an accident in which the coach was injured while riding a motorcycle with his mistress as a passenger.

Petrino had a 34-17 record at Arkansas before he was dismissed in the wake of the scandal.


COLORADO: Mike MacIntyre is leaving San Jose State to take over as Colorado’s coach.

MacIntyre inherits a program that’s had seven straight losing seasons, including a 1-11 record this year.

San Jose State is 10-2 and heading to the Dec. 27 Military Bowl, two years after a 1-12 record in McIntyre’s first season.


UTEP: The Miners hired Sean Kugler as their new coach, bringing in a former UTEP player and assistant coach to replace the retired Mike Price.
