CHELSEA — Jonathan W. Brown, 77, of Chelsea, died on January 19, 2013 at the Togus VA Hospice. An honors graduate of Harvard, he did early research in psychopharmacology and hallucinogens at the Harvard Medical School and then attended Northwestern University, where he received a degree in clinical psychology.

He worked extensively in community mental health and social systems interventions for such programs as Headstart, the Job Corps, and Model Cities and was associated with the National Training Laboratories in many projects.

He moved to Maine in 1974 and worked with AMHI, Crisis & Counseling, NAPPI, Mid-Maine Medical Center, King Fahad Hospital in Saudi Arabia and NGM Insurance. He mediated in Maine’s courts for many years.

He had deep commitment to jazz and was known for his field recordings, his encyclopedic knowledge of modern jazz artists, as well as his friendships with musicians.

He is survived by his children and stepchildren: Timothy Brown of Hermosa Beach, CA; Elizabeth Barker and husband Sean of Amherst, MA; Stephen Sinclair and wife Shannon of Bath, ME; David Sinclair and wife Lauren of Bath, ME; Alicia Sinclair and husband Mark Punyanitya of New York City; his partner Carole Rideout; his ex-wife and close friend Karin Sinclair, as well a horde of siblings, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, and innumerable dear friends.

He lived with style, grace, and compassion, and will be missed by all. A private service for family and close friends will be held at a later date. Jon’s family would like to sincerely thank the Togus and HealthReach Hospice staff for their kindness and exemplary care during his final days.
