Falmouth completed a sweep of the Class A Nordic titles, and Merriconeag won both Class C Nordic titles as the state skiing championships continued Tuesday.

In the Class A meet at Black Mountain in Rumford, Falmouth followed up its strong showing in Monday’s 5-kilometer classic races, as both the boys’ and girls’ teams secured their Nordic titles. The Yachtsmen placed four skiers among the top nine in 5K girls’ freestyle, and four in the top 16 in the boys’ race.

Sarah Wade of Mt. Blue was the individual girls’ winner in 14 minutes, 56.6 seconds — 10 seconds ahead of Portland’s Abby Popenoe. Falmouth, meanwhile, packed its four scorers into positions 6-9, with Caitlin Bucksbaum (15:59.1), Anna Morin (16:25.6), Dana Bloch (16:27.4) and London Bernier (16:32.7). The Yachtsmen finished with 61 points, while Portland took second with 79.

Silas Eastman of Fryeburg Academy added the boys’ freestyle title to his classic victory a day earlier, finishing in 11:45.6. He was followed by Ben Allen (12:21.9) of Portland and Jay Lesser (12:26.3) of Falmouth. Sam Pratico (11th, 13:27.3), Gabriel Mahoney (12th, 13:29.1) and Iain Kurry (16th, 14:01.9) also scored for Falmouth, which had a 28-point edge over Mt. Blue, 84-112.

The alpine competition also began Tuesday with giant slalom races, but complete results for both Class A and Class C were unavailable.

 

CLASS C: Jack Pierce placed second in the 5K freestyle race at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle to lead Merriconeag to its first team title in any boys’ sport, and the girls’ team captured its third consecutive Nordic crown.

The girls won by 20 points over Freeport, 46-66, placing four skiers in the top eight — Emilie Chace-Donahue (4th, 16:54.5), Samantha Pierce (5th, 17:03.2), Zoe Chace-Donahue (6th, 17:11.4) and Teegan Wu (8th, 17:53.0). Hannah Streinz of Katahdin win the individual champion in 16:02.6.

Streinz’s brother, Daniel, won the boys’ race in 13:07.9, beating Pierce by 36 seconds. Ben Tindall (7th, 14:45.6), Graham Roeber (9th, 14:50.5) and John Burgess (17th, 15:43.9) also helped Merriconeag beat Falmouth in the final Nordic standings, 63-96.
