TAMPA, Fla. – Mark Teixeira will be out at least until early May with a strained right wrist tendon, the latest major injury setback for the New York Yankees.

New York GM Brian Cashman gave the news Wednesday after the Yankees were beaten 8-2 by the Dominican Republic World Baseball Classic team.

Teixeira was hurt swinging a bat Tuesday in an indoor cage during pregame warmups with the U.S. WBC team. Initially, Teixeira was expected to be out 8 to 10 days, but he was examined by Yankees doctors in New York and a prognosis of 8 to 10 weeks was given.

Cashman, who broke his leg and dislocated his ankle in a skydiving accident Monday, said Teixeira will rest for four weeks before beginning rehabilitation. Teixeira will remain in New York and not rejoin the team in Florida to start his recovery program.

Cashman does not seem inclined to move Kevin Youkilis from third to first. Youkilis was signed in December to fill in for third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who will be out until at least the All-Star break after left hip surgery in January.

It’s the second major injury for the Yankees during spring training this year. Outfielder Curtis Granderson broke his right forearm when he was hit by a pitch Feb. 24. He will also be sidelined until early May.

CARDINALS: St. Louis hired former great Willie McGee as a special assistant to the general manager, focusing on the minor leagues.

WBC: Kansas City Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer will replace the injured Mark Teixeira on the United States team at the World Baseball Classic.

ORIOLES-SPAIN: Jake Arrieta allowed one unearned run in three innings, and Russ Canzler had two home runs and drove in six runs as Baltimore outed Spain’s World Baseball Classic team 19-7 in Sarasota, Fla.

ANGELS-ITALY: Jered Weaver struck out five in three innings and top prospect Kaleb Cowart drove in three runs as Los Angeles beat Team Italy 12-6 at Tempe, Ariz.

METS-VENEZUELA: Jonathon Niese struggled against Venezuela’s All-Star lineup, allowing four runs in New York’s 14-10 loss at Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Miguel Cabrera homered twice for Venezuela’s starting lineup that featured five 2012 All-Stars at the top of the order.

PUERTO RICO-TWINS: Angel Pagan led an All-Star lineup for Puerto Rico’s national team by going 2 for 3 with an RBI in an 8-7 victory over Minnesota at Fort Myers, Fla.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC-YANKEES: New York right-hander Hiroki Kuroda temporarily slowed down the heavy-hitting Dominican Republic World Baseball Classic team, allowing two hits over three scoreless innings in New York’s 8-2 loss at Tampa, Fla.

DODGERS-MEXICO: Andre Ethier hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Dee Gordon a two-run double in the second, leading Los Angeles to a 10-2 victory over a Mexico team preparing for the World Baseball Classic at Glendale, Ariz.

Zack Greinke was scratched from his start for the Dodgers because of flu-like symptoms.

INDIANS-DODGERS: Jason Giambi drove in two runs and Justin Masterson outpitched Hyun-Jin Ryu, leading Cleveland over Los Angeles 4-0 at Goodyear, Ariz.

CARDS-MARLINS: Jake Westbrook showed no ill effects of the bruised knee that forced him to leave his first spring start after one inning, limiting Miami to a run and four hits over three innings of St. Louis’ 7-2 win at Jupiter, Fla.

PHILLIES-NATIONALS: Roy Halladay outpitched Stephen Strasburg in a marquee matchup that became a bit testy as Philadelphia beat Washington 6-3 at Clearwater, Fla.

In the third inning, Washington’s Strasburg hit Chase Utley in the lower left leg with a pitch. After getting two quick outs in the fourth, the Phillies’ Halladay threw a pitch behind Tyler Moore.

TIGERS-BLUE JAYS: Torii Hunter hit his first home run with Detroit, Justin Verlander allowed one hit in four innings and the Tigers beat Toronto 4-1 at Lakeland, Fla.

BREWERS-MARINERS: Rickie Weeks got three hits, and roster hopefuls Khris Davis and Hunter Morris homered as Milwaukee beat Seattle 7-6 at Peoria, Ariz., ending the Mariners’ 10-game winning streak.

ROYALS-DIAMONDBACKS: Alex Gordon hit a grand slam, James Shields pitched three scoreless innings and Kansas City (11-0-1) beat Arizona 8-1 at Scottsdale, Ariz., to remain unbeaten in spring training.
