GEORGETOWN — Arthur E. Tibbetts Sr., 82, of Bay Point died Thursday, March 14, 2013 at his residence after a long battle with cancer.

He was born in Hallowell on August 4, 1930, a son of Elmer Sr. and Ruth S. (Burnham) Tibbetts.

Arthur attended Georgetown schools, and at a young age began digging clams. On July 11, 1950 he married Joan P. Burnham and started his lobstering business which he ran until retiring in 2002. He was employed at Maine Yankee in 1968 for many years. In 1978 he began his employment at Bath Iron Works, retiring in 1997. He also drove the Georgetown School bus for many years and picked up the captains navigating the ships up and down the Kennebec to and from BIW.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge of Bath, the Solar Lodge of Masons in Bath and the Kora Temple Shriners in Lewiston.

He enjoyed hunting, lobstering, golfing, sport fishing, clam digging, watching NASCAR, the Red Sox and wrestling. He also just enjoyed relaxing at his home sitting in his glass sunroom enjoying the ocean view and just watching the activity on the Kennebec.

He was predeceased by his wife, Joan P. Tibbetts on January 21, 2012, a daughter, Sherry-Ann Tibbetts, two sisters, Carol Soule and Leona Newman.

He is survived by a daughter, Michelle Plummer and her husband Glenn of Five Islands, two sons, Arthur E. Tibbetts Jr. and his companion Arlene Smith of Camden and Michael Tibbetts of Georgetown, two brothers, Charles “Sonny” Tibbetts and his wife Barbara of Bath and Elmer Tibbetts and his wife Noreen of South Portland, two sisters, Donna Dodge and her husband Allen of Durham and Nancy Coley and her husband Parker of Leominster, MA, one sister in law, Pam Matthews and her husband Dave of Panama City, FL, one grandson, Matt Tibbetts and his wife Christina of Thomaston, two great grandchildren, Lyla and Lucas Tibbetts, many nieces, nephews and special friends and a very special niece Jody Cressey Murphy of Woolwich, also his loving dog/buddy Terra.

A celebration of life with an Elks and Masonic Service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the Five Islands Baptist Church, Old Schoolhouse Road, with Pastor Barry Moore officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Georgetown Community Center. Burial will be at Mountainside cemetery in Georgetown in the spring.
