The couple became the driving force behind the establishment of Beautiful Savior Church, planting it and helping the church obtain mission status and grow over the next 20 years. They also became involved with community activities in Bath, delivering Meals on Wheels, pursuing Bath Maritime Museum activities, and volunteering for the Coast Guard Auxiliary. They also had a bed and breakfast in West Bath called “Be Our Guest.”
Following her husband’s death in 1990, Mary moved to North Yarmouth, again taking advantage of community volunteer opportunities. She was president of the Cumberland/ North Yarmouth Senior Citizens, volunteered at Coastal Manor Nursing Home, worked in the archives at North Yarmouth Historical Society, and enthusiastically supported the North Yarmouth Republican Committee. With all of these she made many dear friends.
Her family and church, however, were foremost for Mary. She served both so faithfully and delighted in every small blessing. She gave thanks continually, surrounded herself with the beauty and power of inspirational teaching, and describing her life as the “most fulfilled that one could imagine.”
Mary is survived by her daughter Mary Ellen Farrell and her husband Charles, 3 beautiful grandchildren, and 2 sweet great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 2:00 Sunday, April 14th at First Parish Church in Pownal. Flowers might be sent to someone you love.
