GPS Portland Phoenix wins 2-0 in first round of U.S. Open Cup

Pierre Omanga scored two goals – one in the first 45 seconds and another on a penalty kick in the closing minutes – to lead GPS Portland Phoenix to a 2-0 win over Mass Premier Soccer in an opening-round U.S. Open Cup match Tuesday night at Deering High’s Memorial Field.

The Phoenix, who play in the fourth-tier Premier Development League, advance to a second-round game May 21 at the Rochester (N.Y.) Rhinos, who play in the third-tier U.S. Pro Division.

Adam Perron made eight saves for the Phoenix. Jeff Newman made five saves for MPS, which held a 6-3 edge in corners, and outshot the Phoenix, 16-10.
