With tennis already bestowing some postseason hardware (please see story), other spring sports are closing in on the end of their regular seasons.

Here’s a glimpse:

Baseball

Scarborough’s baseball team tumbled from the undefeated ranks Tuesday, but not before winning its first 12 games. The Red Storm rolled at Portland last Thursday, 9-2, behind six shutout innings from lefty Jayme Lappin, Ben Greenberg had four hits, including two doubles, Trevor Sparda had a key two-run double, nine different players had at least one hit and Scarborough also dazzled defensively in a team-wide effort.

“We’re all hitting,” Greenberg said. “It’s good to see. If one guy doesn’t have his best day, another guy picks him up.”

“It was a good game,” Lappin said. “A lot of fun. It was my first time pitching here.”

“I’m pleasantly surprised,” added Scarborough first-year coach Ryan Jones. “This group of guys works its tails off. They all trust each other and pick each other up. It’s awesome to see.”

After prevailing, 4-2, over visiting Windham Saturday (Nick Bagley had a clutch two-run double and Greenberg earned the win with a three-hitter while fanning seven) and 13-3 at Sanford Monday (Greenberg drove in four runs and Brendan Hall had three hits and three RBI), the Red Storm was shocked at home by Gorham, 3-1, Tuesday. Scarborough only mustered five hits and Lappin was the hard-luck loser. The Red Storm (second to Marshwood in the Western Class A Heal Points standings at press time) was at Cheverus Thursday, visits Marshwood Saturday and closes the regular season at home versus South Portland Tuesday.

The Red Riots dropped to 10th in the standings with a 5-8 record following a three-game losing streak. South Portland actually enjoyed an impressive 10-3 win at Portland last Wednesday (Adam Helmke had three RBI and Nick Whitten got the victory), but the Red Riots then lost at home to Kennebunk (6-1), at Bonny Eagle (3-2, failing to hold a 2-0 lead as Zac Marles was the hard-luck loser) and at home to Deering (6-1). South Portland was home with Westbrook Thursday, welcomes Cheverus Saturday and closes at Scarborough Tuesday, possibly needing at least one win to lock up a playoff spot.

In Western B, Cape Elizabeth was 8-5 and 10th in the Heals at press time after wins over visiting Lake Region (1-0) and host Wells (5-4, in nine innings) and an 11-1 home loss to Yarmouth, which snapped a four-game win streak. Against the Lakers, Zach Culver earned the win by striking out 11 on the mound and having the game’s lone RBI. In the victory over the Warriors, Sam Kozlowski drove in the winning run and earned the win in relief. The Capers were at Falmouth Wednesday, host Greely Friday and close at home versus Poland Tuesday.

In Western D, Greater Portland Christian School was 0-5 and sixth in the Heals going into Thursday’s game at Valley.

Softball

Cape Elizabeth’s softball team also fell from the unbeaten ranks. The Capers improved to 12-0 with wins last week over visiting Lake Region (13-1, in five innings) and at Wells (6-4, in eight innings), but Monday, they lost at home to Yarmouth, 3-2. Emma O’Rourke had four hits and Tess Haller added three with three RBI in the win over the Lakers. Against the Warriors, Shannon Nicholson had the go-ahead hit, one of her two on the day, and Haller and O’Rourke both had multiple hits, while Ashley Tinsman hit a home run. Cape Elizabeth (second to Fryeburg in the Western Class B Heal Points) was at Falmouth Wednesday, hosts Greely Friday and plays at home against Poland Tuesday.

In Western A, reigning champion South Portland and perennial powerhouse Scarborough are once again 1-2 in the Heals, to no one’s surprise.

The top-ranked Red Riots improved to 12-2 and stretched their win streak to nine with recent victories over visiting Windham (9-0), host Westbrook (4-3) and visiting Biddeford (4-1). Olivia Indorf threw a one-hitter against the Eagles, while Erin Bogdanovich and Danica Gleason each had three hits to pace the offense. At the Blue Blazes, Gleason had four hits, good for eight total bases, and drove in the winning run. Bogdanovich earned the victory. Against the Tigers, Bogdanovich and Indorf combined on the win, while Gleason had a two-run triple and Bogdanovich hit a home run. South Portland was at Portland Wednesday and closes at home versus Gorham Tuesday of next week.

Scarborough is 12-1 and has won six straight after downing visiting Kennebunk (9-2), host Marshwood (11-2) and visiting Cheverus (12-0, in six innings). Against the Rams, Alyssa Williamson homered, had four hits total and drove in two runs, Marisa O’Toole had a two-run triple and Erin Giles earned the win with a six-hit, eight-strikeout performance, while rapping four hits and driving in two runs. In the win over the Hawks, O’Toole hit two home runs, Grace Farnkoff had three hits, Brenna Kent drove in two runs and Williamson threw a four-hitter for the victory. Giles threw a two-hit shutout against the Stags. The Red Storm was at Windham Wednesday, plays host to Westbrook Friday and closes at Biddeford Tuesday.

Boys’ lacrosse

Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough’s boys’ lacrosse teams are both coming off huge weeks.

The Capers, the top ranked team in the Western B Heal Points standings, rallied from a 5-2 deficit to defeat visiting rival Falmouth, the two-time state champion, 9-6, behind four goals from Alex Bornick and a smothering defensive effort which held the potent Yachtsmen scoreless the final 18 minutes, 39 seconds.

“This was the first year the seniors beat Falmouth both times, home and away,” said Cape Elizabeth senior captain and defensive standout Adam Haversat. “It’s a great way to keep us going.”

“I think it was good decisions, passing and not forcing shots (that turned it around),” Bornick said. “We got Falmouth’s defense tired. As soon as we were ahead, I knew we were staying ahead.”

‘It’s a great accomplishment,” added Capers coach Ben Raymond. “Win or lose tonight, the kids worked hard and I’m pleased with the result.”

Friday, Cape Elizabeth blanked visiting Kennebunk, 5-0, as Bornick scored three times and Capers goalie Gabe McGinn only had to make two saves.

“We have a whole defensive package we can throw at teams,” senior defender Brandon Negele said. “We can switch between seven or eight different defenses. You never know what’s coming from where or what we’re doing. We never want to come out slow. We want to come out firing with everything we’ve got for four quarters. We wanted to build on our momentum.”

“Like always, our defense got it done,” said Bornick. “Their stick skills and foot position and ability to break down an offense makes them great. In practice, they always pick off the passes. Adam’s a magician.”

“The defense played really well,” added Raymond. “They were outstanding. It’s rare to shut a quality team out. We played solid team defense.”

Tuesday, Cape Elizabeth made it eight straight wins and improved to 9-1 with a 19-0 romp at Fryeburg (Bornick and Justin Cary both scored four times and the do-everything Haversat filled in as goalie and made nine saves for the shutout). The Capers host North Yarmouth Academy, the only team to beat them this spring, Friday and close the regular season at Yarmouth Thursday of next week.

Scarborough, the three-time defending Class A state champion, also had a key home win over Kennebunk, 5-4, last Wednesday, as John Wheeler scored twice and Davey Pearson made 11 saves. Saturday, the Red Storm earned a seismic victory, 10-7, at Yarmouth, its first ever over the longtime Class B power, as Wheeler erupted for six goals and Pearson made 20 saves.

“We felt like we needed to prove ourselves, not only as a school, but also as a conference and as a class that we could play with anybody in the state,” Wheeler said. “It’s a very good win. I sure hope it makes a statement.”

“Last year, we lost (to Yarmouth) with 40 seconds left on a man-down goal,” Pearson said. “Coming back this year, we knew we wanted to beat them. This win is definitely big for us.”

“I’m really happy right now,” Scarborough coach Joe Hezlep added. “A game like this shows us the level we can play at when we compete. The boys deserve a lot of credit. We came out and executed pretty well.”

The Red Storm (9-1 and first in the Western A Heals) was at Marshwood Wednesday and closes at Thornton Academy Tuesday of next week.

South Portland entered Wednesday’s home showdown versus Kennebunk (see theforecaster.net for details) clinging to the No. 2 seed in Western A. The Red Riots extended their win streak to five with a 14-8 triumph at Waynflete Saturday. Joey Babbidge and Thomas Leddy both scored three times. The 8-2 Red Riots finish the regular season Wednesday of next week at Biddeford.

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, Cape Elizabeth bounced back from its loss to Waynflete last Monday with a 14-9 home win over Greely Friday and a 15-3 victory at Fryeburg Monday to improve to 7-3 (third behind the Flyers and Rangers in the Western Class B Heal Points standings). Against the Rangers, the Capers rallied from a 5-2 deficit behind four goals each from Hannah Newhall and Talley Perkins and three goals from Lauren Steidl.

“It was a great game,” said Steidl. “(Greely) always comes out really strong. It’s always a challenge for us. We knew we’d have to go really hard today and it paid off.”

“We talked yesterday in practice and before the game that this was a chance for us to play a home playoff game,” Jeff Perkins said. “I said to (the girls) today, ‘Seniors, today was your last day of school and tomorrow’s the prom. I know there’s a lot in your heads, but please give me 50 minutes.’ I think they gave me 40 and I’ll take it. It got us to where we needed to be.”

Against the Raiders, Steidl and Emma Landes both had three goals. Cape Elizabeth hosts Falmouth Tuesday and closes the regular season Thursday of next week at Yarmouth, as the Capers seek to avenge a loss from earlier in the year.

In Western A, three-time defending state champion Scarborough handled host Gorham, 11-6, last Thursday, as Abby Mills had three goals, but Tuesday, the Red Storm fell to 6-4 with a 9-5 home loss to Marshwood, which closed the game on a 6-1 run. Maiti Kent and Avery Pietras both had two goals, but it wasn’t enough.

“We had some great moments and some not-so-great moments,” Scarborough coach Marica Wood said. “We haven’t played a complete game. It gets frustrating. We can’t use the excuses we’re young and inexperienced anymore. We have to do something.”

Scarborough (fourth in Western A at press time) hosts Kennebunk Friday and closes at Windham Wednesday.

South Portland was 5-4 and seventh at press time after an 8-6 home loss to Windham and an 8-3 win at Deering in recent action. In the setback, Lani Edwards had three goals. Edwards, along with Aimee LaPlante and Abby Letourneau, had two goals versus the Rams. The Red Riots were home with Biddeford Thursday, welcome Portland Friday and close at Bonny Eagle Wednesday.

Track

Local outdoor track teams had their last regular season meet last weekend.

Scarborough and South Portland joined Cheverus, Deering, Portland, Gorham, Westbrook and Windham for the Cumberland County meet in Gorham. In the boys’ meet, the Red Storm edged Cheverus by a point, as the Red Riots placed fourth. Scarborough got wins from Ryan Jamison in the 200 (22.9 seconds), Robert Hall in the mile (4 minutes, 33.44 seconds) and the two-mile (10:08.74), Alec James in the pole vault (12 feet) and its 3,200 relay team (8:35.43). South Portland’s Ben Michaud won both the long (20-0.5) and triple (40-2.75) jumps.

On the girls’ side, Scarborough was third and South Portland fifth. The Red Riots won the 3,200 relay (10:26.59). The Red Storm’s top finisher was Sarah Rinaldi, runner-up in the high jump (5-2) and triple jump (31-9.5).

Cape Elizabeth joined powerhouses Falmouth and Greely at Yarmouth for its finale. The Capers were fourth in both genders. The boys were led by runners-up Eddie Galvin in the long (19-6.75) and triple (39.9.25) jumps, Deven Roberts in the 110 hurdles (17.16) and the high jump (5-10), Liam Simpson in the two-mile (9:49.45) and the 3,200 relay (9:24.2). The girls were paced by their second-place 400 relay team (56.46).

Cape Elizabeth will head to Lake Region for the Western Maine Conference championship meet Saturday. Scarborough and South Portland vie for the Southwestern Maine Activities Association top spot at Thornton Academy.

The state meets are Saturday, June 1.
