Rangers still not talking about reports Vigneault will replace Tortorella as coach

Amid reports that Alain Vigneault is the New York Rangers’ choice to replace fired coach John Tortorella, the team still isn’t ready to make that announcement.

Vigneault, the former Vancouver coach, has emerged from a group of candidates that included former Rangers captain Mark Messier. He interviewed at the club’s organizational meetings in California and then met with owner James Dolan in New York.

BASEBALL

NECBL: Thomas Roulis hit a two-out triple and scored on an error in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Vermont Mountaineers (5-2) to a 1-0 win over the Sanford Mainers (2-4) at Montpelier, Vermont.

Sanford starter Conor Krauss gave up just three hits and struck out seven over six innings.

TWILIGHT LEAGUE: Corbin Hyde doubled and scored during a three-run, fifth-inning rally for Yankee Ford (1-2) in a 3-2 victory over Aero Heating and Ventilating (1-2) on at Cumberland.

Todd Keneborus hit a two-run homer during a three-run first inning and finished with three RBI to lead Lenders Network (3-0) to a 6-1 win over Patriot Insurance (1-2) at Cumberland.

HIGH SCHOOLS

TRACK AND FIELD: Lake Region sophomore Kate Hall earned All-America honors with a fourth-place finish Saturday in the 100-meter dash at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C.

Hall’s time was 11.74, just .12 behind winner Ky Westbrook of Chandler, Ariz.

Bethanie Brown of Waterville achieved an all-time state best for the second day in a row, clocking 10:24.44 in the 2-mile to beat the mark of 10:26.59 set by Kennebunk’s Abbey Leonardi in 2010. Brown finished eighth.

TENNIS

QUEENS CUP: Top-seeded Andy Murray rallied to beat defending champion Marin Cilic 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 and win the London grass-court tournament for the third time.

GERRY WEBER OPEN: Roger Federer won his first title of the year, overcoming a sluggish start to beat unseeded Mikhail Youzhny 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 in a grass-court event at Halle, Germany.

COLLEGES

BASEBALL: North Carolina State’s Carlos Rodon (10-2) pitched eight shutout innings and the Wolfpack knocked ACC pitcher of the year Kent Emanuel out of the game early in an 8-1 victory over top-seeded North Carolina (57-11) in their College World Series opener at Omaha, Neb.

GOLF

EUROPEAN TOUR: Ireland’s Simon Thornton beat South Africa’s Tjaart Van der Walt with a par on the first hole of a playoff in the Najeti Hotels Open at Saint-Omer, France, for his first European Tour title.
