A cool cloudy day is in store for Mainers as the heat of the weekend is now well in the past.  Ocean air is firmly entrenched and this means that temperatures will stay in the lower and middle 70s all day. There won’t be much in the way of sunshine as clouds rule the skies.  Showers will be infrequent and while this isn’t a great beach day, it will be nice to get outside and enjoy golf, a walk, gardening, or any other activity that doesn’t need sunshine and heat.

 
I am on vacation this week and while I don’t want it to rain, I don’t mind the cooler weather.  When it’s not very hot I can do more outside and don’t have to worry so much about sunburn, dehydration or generally feeling overwhelmed by 90 degree weather.
 
Showers are possible today and tomorrow, but there will be many hours of dry weather between any rain.  Temperatures are going to remain cool tomorrow as well, with highs in the 70s. 
Wednesday warmer and more humid air tries to push into Maine.  This brings with it more humidity and still the chance for rain.  Thursday appears to be the wettest day of the week with the best chance of rain and even thunderstorms. 
 
A cold front will slowly cross the area for the end of the week and provided it keeps moving east, we should have a nice weekend.  Temperatures will start to become warmer Saturday and Sunday with much of the region seeing maximum readings in the lower to middle 80s.  
 
I will have to watch the progress of the cold front carefully over the weekend.  If the front is unable to clear the coast then the clouds and even showers could linger.  This doesn’t appear to be the case, but anytime you have a slow moving front, like the one we have this weekend, it has to be watched very carefully.
   
Next week the heat will increase further and interior sections of southern Maine could see 90F degree readings once again.  The third week in July is climatologically one of the nicest weeks of the year.  When people ask which summer week to take for vacation, I tell them that I can’t guarantee anything, but week number 3 of July is often sunny, warm and dry.  Again this year, this appears, at this early stage, to be the case.
 
There is a lot that can still happen to the forecast in the next few days, but early indications are for a better pattern beginning Saturday.
