PORTLAND — A Scarborough man suspected of tattooing underage girls in a motel room was indicted by a Cumberland County grand jury this month.

Joshua Grant, 35, was indicted on a total of 19 charges, including unlawful sexual contact, furnishing scheduled drugs, endangering the welfare of a child, tattooing without a license, tattooing underage clients, allowing minors to possess liquor and possession of sexually explicit materials featuring subjects under the age of 16.

The indictment was announced July 5 by the Cumberland County district attorney’s office. An indictment is a finding that enough evidence exists to prosecute, not a finding of guilt.

On March 13, Grant allegedly tattooed two 14-year-old girls in a room at the Downeaster Motel, 184 U.S. Route 1. He was arrested on March 28 after a school guidance counselor learned about the tattoos and tipped police, according to a previous report.

Grant is also on federal probation for being a convicted felon possessing a firearm, according to the Scarborough Police Department.

Tamara Getchell, spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office, said she didn’t have details on Grant’s previous conviction. She also said a hearing date has not been set. 

Grant faces two class C felonies, 13 class D misdemeanors and four class E misdemeanors. In Maine, class C crimes are punishable by up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines; class D crimes are punishable by up to one year in prison and $2,000 in fines; and class E crimes are punishable by up to six months in jail and $1,000 in fines.
