Margaret “Peggy” E. McCollum, 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Mid Coast Hospital with her family by her side.

She was born March 4, 1923, in Caribou, Maine, to Raymond L. and Adelma (Lafferty) Newbegin. She lived in Caribou until the age of nine when she moved to the Anderson farm in West Bowdoin. She attended a one-room school in Bowdoin and then graduated from Edward Little High School.

She served as a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy, working stateside in military offices during WWII. She continued her service in the Naval Reserves after her military retirement. The state of Maryland became her home where she was employed as a real estate agent. She looked forward to her trips back to Maine each year to visit family and enjoyed fishing, camping and the lakes of Maine. For a short period of time in 1958 she was married to Charles McCollum.

She was a loving, witty, feisty, sassy woman who loved life. She greeting each morning throughout her life by proclaiming, “Good Morning World.” She enjoyed cooking, doing her own carpentry and car repairs and outings with friends.

Religion was a cherished part of Peggy’s life. For many years she was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Huntingtown, Maryland. She later became a member of the Dunkirk Baptist Church in Dunkirk, Maryland where she was active in the “Inspirations” seniors group. At both churches she enjoyed her time with the adult Sunday School classes and dining out with her church friends.

In 2010 she moved to Maine to be closer to family, living at The Highlands and then Sunnybrook Village. At both places she truly adored her caregivers who showed her respect, love and friendship. She kept them on their toes as you never knew what she was going to say next! She loved sitting in her living room at Sunnybrook each morning feeling the sunshine come through her window as she overlooked Moose Pond.

She was predeceased by three brothers Clifford, Floyd and Raymond Newbegin and two sisters, Arline Henry and Thelma Grant. She is survived by one sister, Geneva Adams, formally of Bowdoin, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and greatnephews.

The family will hold a private Celebration of Life Memorial Service this summer. Memorial donations may be sent to the local food pantry that she supported: Calvert County Churches Food Pantry, P.O. Box 1334, Huntingtown, MD 20639.
