Rain continues to fall across the region with pockets of heavier showers embedded within the larger area of precipitation.  Throughout the afternoon and evening the rain will come down hard enough to produce urban street flooding. 

It looks like the timing of the rain will impact the Friday commute which is normally horrible on Friday’s, especially in the summer.   The cause of this rain is a frontal system inching its way eastward into New England.  Since the front is moving slowly, while pushing into very humid air, the amount of rain many areas will receive will be high.  Some spots could see over 2 inch of rain, while a general half to one inch is likely everywhere.

Flood watches and even some warnings are already up for widespread areas of the northeast.  In today’s situation these types of advisories are issued for mainly for street flooding, not a problem with large rivers.

Humidity levels are going to be very high the rest of the day and throughout most of the overnight.  I have the air conditioner on in the house not so much for cooling, but for drying.  While today is basically a summer washout, the weekend is looking stellar.

As the front pushes east of the region early Saturday drier and eventually cooler air will replace the tropical air of today.

I am bullish on the weekend forecast, but there are a few minor issues to keep in mind.  When you get up tomorrow is may still feel somewhat humid.  The good news is the amount of moisture in the air will be falling throughout the day so by afternoon you probably won’t even notice the humidity anymore.

Temperatures will reach the 80s in most spots and with a westerly wind, the coast will end up the warmest.  While tomorrow won’t be windy per se, there will be a land breeze that will be pushing the warmer water out to sea.  This means that although air temperatures will be warm enough to go swimming you will notice the ocean has cooled off a bit.

While tonight will be a bit tough for sleeping due to all the humidity, tomorrow night looks amazing with lows in the 50s accompanies by very dry air.

Sunday is my pick for the weekend only because it will be slightly cooler and dry all day.  Highs on Sunday should hit the middle 70s to lower 80s.  I will rank Sunday a 10 out of 10 with nearly a cloudless sky.  If you haven’t gone to the beach or taken advantage of the weather yet this summer don’t miss out on Sunday.

The peak of the Perseid meteor showers occurs early next week in the predawn hours of August 12^th and 13^th.  There could be an issue with clouds and a few showers during the peak, but don’t worry, the meteors are already putting on a good show that is only getting better each night.  Skies look to be clear Saturday night into Sunday morning and this will provide a super opportunity to see the meteors.   Park a lawn chair or your blanket and face east.  If you are patient I can all but guarantee you will see several meteors within an hour.  Further details in an upcoming blog later this weekend.

Gardening this week If you have a sunny spot and a good size container, how about planting carrots? Carrots can be successfully grown in containers and you will be surprised how many you will get.
