A bit of everything is in store this weekend, but the theme is most of the weekend will be dry.   As evening falls upon southern Maine a southerly breeze is keeping the coast cooler than inland areas with moderate levels of humidity for all of us.

Since the air is originating over southern climes, our nighttime temperatures are going to be quite mild this final weekend of August.   I don’t expect anyone to fall under 60F for the next several days and lots of us will see lows in the middle and even upper 60s this weekend.

Tides will be lowest during the middle part of the afternoon this weekend which means your walk to the water after lunch will take a bit longer.  Water temperatures are still running mild in the mid-60s.  I checked the temperature off Old Orchard Beach this afternoon and it was running at 65F.  While this might be a shock to someone from South Carolina, for a Mainer, that is bathtub water.

If you are sailing this weekend you can expect a  south/southwesterly wind that will not be very busy running up to about 10kts during the afternoon before falling back closer to calm at night and during the early morning.

Rainfall will be limited Saturday and Sunday, yet I am mentioning a chance of a few showers.  Plan on it being dry, but don’t be surprised if you see a quick hitting shower.  Temperatures Saturday and Sunday will run in the upper 70s to mid-80s and with the added moisture in the air, it will certainly still feel like summer.

The exception to the rain will be if you are up in the mountains or over northern or central Maine where the risk is greater.  There is also the chance of a few thunderstorms with some heavier downpours so if you are hiking or camping in the western mountains this weekend, bring the rain gear and the extra tarp.

For the rest of us, Labor Day appears to be the wettest of the upcoming three days.  Temperatures will be in the 70s and the risk of seeing a shower is greater than not getting wet.

The reason for the showers in the forecast is due to several fronts that will cross or be near us through the first part of the upcoming week.   The exact placement of the fronts and the timing of their passage if it occurs will determine exactly who gets what in terms of rainfall.

So while this won’t be as nice as last weekend, we certainly could do worse for a holiday weekend.  Sunset is going to be about 7:15 this weekend so if you are having a barbeque you might want to start it a bit earlier so you don’t have to worry about the dark.

Gardening this week Tomatoes have been slow to mature this month. I believe the heat of July stunted the formation of fruit and this is one reason we are seeing fewer tomatoes than expected. In this video below, shot on my own camera, I show you what was going on with my own garden a few weeks ago. Not much has changed although I have been able to make a few jars of sauce.
