South Portland stuns state champion Thornton Academy

Senior quarterback Duncan Preston passed for four touchdowns to lead South Portland to a stunning 26-13 upset of defending Class A state champion Thornton Academy on Friday night at Martin Memorial Field.

South Portland scored on its first three possessions to take an 18-0 lead, then survived a Thornton comeback attempt that cut the margin to 18-13 in the fourth quarter.

Andrew Libby, Thornton’s all-purpose threat, left the game with a leg injury after returning a kickoff 55 yards following South Portland’s first score. He did not return.

Preston completed 16 of 21 passes for 238 yards. He also ran 22 times for 137 yards.

Jordan Susi caught six passes for 71 yards and two scores. Joey DiBiase broke two tackles on a screen pass that resulted in a 70-yard score. Tight end Jared Muller made a leaping catch on a 25-yard score for the game’s first touchdown.



Bonny Eagle rolls past Biddeford

Quarterback Zach Dubiel ran for a 51-yard touchdown and threw scoring passes of 53 and 33 yards in the first half as Bonny Eagle defeated Biddeford 48-14 in the football season opener.

The Scots led 41-0 at the half at Waterhouse Field, compiling 320 yards of total offense.

Matt Smith scored on two runs, Jon Woods scored on a run and pass and Joey Bissonnette scored on a pass.

Stephen Hannigan scored in the second half. He also blocked a punt.
