TOPSHAM — Sumner R. Archer, age 79, of Marc Avenue, died Sunday, September 22, 2013, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was born May 11, 1934, in Rockland, the son of Sumner B. and Frances Dobbins Archer.

He was educated in Thomaston schools and graduated from Thomaston High School in 1952. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1953 and was honorably discharged in 1956. He was very proud to serve in the Marines. He married Barbara Parker on December 31, 1988.

He was employed by the telephone company, by Maine Yankee, which he helped to build, and by Bath Iron Works, where he retired after 30 years of service.

Sumner loved sports, especially the N.E. Patriots, the Red Sox and horse racing. He also liked to play cards, his favorite card game being Texas Holdem. He loved his cat, Skoshi, who recently passed away after giving him 18 years of companionship.

He was a life-member of the American Legion Smith Tobey Post 21 in Bath and a member of the Evergreens Club in Brunswick.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Barbara of Topsham, sons Scott Archer and his wife Lisa of Rockland, Tom Archer of Rockland, and Michael Archer of Thomaston, daughter Maria Archer of Rockland, stepchildren William Toothaker and his wife Debra of Freeport, David Toothaker and his wife Peggy of Brunswick, and Deborah Grobe and her husband Carl of Westfield, MA, 5 grandchildren, and several stepgrandchildren.

Burial with military honors will be held on Wednesday, October 2nd at 10 a.m. at Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta.
