BRUNSWICK

New speed limits at Brunswick Landing will go into effect on Oct. 10.

Legislation passed earlier this year provided Brunswick police jurisdiction over the former naval air station, where for more than 60 years it was patrolled by military police with dogs and automatic rifles.

Now, the locally-determined and Maine Department of Transportation-ratified speed limits are the bookend law that allows town cops to enforce them.

All roads on the former base once were limited to 15 or 20 mph, depending on location. Now, the entire length of Admiral Fitch Drive and Orion Street, from SeaHawk Avenue to the southern gate, are 35-mph zones.  Motorists everywhere else are limited to 25 mph.

Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority’s Board of Directors passed the ordinance Sept. 25 in Portland, during a regular meeting held amid a nationwide base closure and redevelopment forum.
