BRUNSWICK — Delma S. Weed Merrill, 91, passed away Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at Maine Medical Center after a valiant struggle following vascular surgery. For two months she worked to rehabilitate and be able to return to her home surprising many with her age and spirit.

Del was born in Levant, Maine, in 1922 to Ellery and Minnie Stevens. She moved to Stetson at an early age where she grew up in rural Maine with her two sisters and her brother. She thoroughly enjoyed her school years and had many fond memories of both her teachers and classmates.

After graduation, she moved to Bangor and over the next few years she worked caring for children and as a waitress in Connecticut, Portland and finally Auburn where she met Stephen T. Weed. They enjoyed their time together, sometimes taking flights in his small Piper Cub airplane. They married in 1946 and moved to Brunswick to start their family.

Steve worked building them a home on Durham Road that they moved into in 1948, of which she was very proud of and where she was able to spend the rest of her life. There they raised four children with her being the homemaker and Steve working alternating shifts at Pejepscot Paper Co. She loved socializing with people, whether in the local sewing club, taking bus trips with her friends or joining a bowling league at Yankee Lanes. As an active grandmother she taught her grandchildren to play Skip Bo at an early age while they stayed at her house after school. She thoroughly enjoyed attending any and all of their sporting events, as well as Bowdoin hockey games. Strawberry picking with grandchildren was a ritual with her being the fastest of the pickers. She was a faithful attendee at local Memorial Day, Moxie and Fourth of July parades. She and Steve spent family vacations for many years camping around the state and particularly at Sebago State Park. After retiring they extended their traveling into Canada camping with friends.

Steve passed away in 1994 after a lingering illness. Her constant care allowed him to remain in their home until the last month of his life. In 2000 she got back in touch with a former classmate Clarence Merrill from her high school class of five and they married soon afterward. They were known for their extensive daily drives and when asked where they had gone today, the answer might include Canada or some neighboring states. Clarence was taken ill and passed away in 2004.

She worked seasonally for 13 years at L.L. Bean which allowed her to make many new friends, while enjoying the work she did. Traveling on vacations with her family took her to the western and southeastern parts of the U.S. In later years she joined the Evergreens Senior Citizens, playing beano every Monday, thoroughly enjoying herself even while she very seldom won. She enjoyed life, loved eating out, visiting with family, talking on the phone with her many friends and was always up for any road trip.

She leaves behind a son Ronald Weed of Brunswick, and daughters Sharon Dutton of Brunswick, Patricia Biggs and son-in-law Doug of Brunswick and Barbara Bisson and partner Tim Davis of West Bath. She also leaves eight grandchildren: Darcy Dutton and husband Jim Morgan of Dresden, Jason Weed and partner Kelli Johnson of Phoenix, Arizona, Carey Douglass and husband Dave of Topsham, Ashley Wright and husband Jeff of Durham, Erika Carlile of Brunswick, Christine Bisson of Bath, Dustin Biggs and wife Kari of Wales, Mark Bisson of Bath and great-grandchildren Logan, Evan, Kambria, Kiara, Maxwell and Grady..

There will be a memorial service at the First Baptist Church on Church Road in Brunswick on Sunday at two o’clock followed by a gathering at the adjacent hall. Memorial contributions may be made to the Evergreen Senior Citizens at 1 Columbus Drive, Brunswick, or the First Baptist Church, 284 Church Road, Brunswick.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick.
