BRUNSWICK — A Portland transient is in custody after police responded to an attempted robbery at the Bank of America branch on Maine Street shortly after 3 p.m.
According to police reports, Raymond D. Leavitt, 51, walked into the bank at 110 Maine St. about 3:10 p.m. Monday and handed the teller a note demanding cash. A bank employee triggered an alarm, and Brunswick police Sergeant Russell Wrede and Officer Dan Sylvain collared Leavitt several minutes later as he left the bank on foot.
Leavitt was carrying knives at the time of his apprehension, but did not display a weapon during the attempted robbery.
He is charged with one count of attempted robbery, a Class B felony, and taken to Cumberland County Jail in Portland to await arraignment. Bail was set at $5,000.
Additionally, Leavitt was booked on an outstanding warrant from Old Orchard Beach Police Department for failure to pay fines.
Police did not say whether Leavitt obtained any money before leaving the bank.
It was the second attempted robbery in Brunswick in the past three days, following a prior hold-up at the Cumberland Farms store on Pleasant Street Friday night.
Police continue to investigate that incident, and the two suspects — who fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash — remain at large.
