Here comes the wind.  We haven’t had a real weather event around here in months.   Perhaps some big thunderstorms over the summer or some heavy rain in late August, but in general it has been smooth sailing for a while.  Tomorrow is going to be a wild and windy day, but before we get there, let’s get the kids out and back safe and dry this evening.

A flow of milder air will keep clouds in place this afternoon.   Temperatures are continuing to rise and will be well into the 40s and lower 50s this evening.

Showers showing up on radar now, but the bulk of any significant rain is going to stay over western New England for the first part of the evening.   The rainfall will slowly be marching east and around 7PM this is what the radar should look like.  Notice there will be showers across much of Maine, but the heaviest rain should fall west of the coastal plane.  Nonetheless, take umbrellas for the kids.

Late at night periods of  rainfall will continue and the winds will continue to increase.  If you are a light sleeper, you could have trouble sleeping towards morning as the winds increase.  There is a high wind watch in effect for parts of southern New England and a high wind warning down east Maine for wind gusts that could exceed 50 miles per hour.

If the winds do materialize as expected, scattered power issues are possible as tree limbs and entire trees can fall.

 

Windy Friday
Friday morning will be the wettest and windiest part of the day as showers and perhaps even the rumble of thunder cross the area.  Temperatures will be warm in the 60s and there will be humidity in the air.  Friday won’t be the day to do any leaf raking, but it will be a day when many of the leaves fall to the ground.

 

Parade Forecast
If you want to head to Boston for the Red Sox parade it begins at 10AM Saturday.  That is going to be a great day with sunshine mixing with clouds and mild air still in place.  There is the risk for a quick shower in the afternoon as a front crosses ushering in colder air for Sunday.  However, I don’t expect any shower activity to be major and the winds will be light.  How warm will it be Saturday?  Temperatures around noon should reach the lower 60s, certainly a great temperature for a parade in November.

We have the same forecast for Maine, but the temperatures will not be as warm.

 

Eclipse
Sunday morning brings an earlier sunrise as we will have set the clocks back an hour.  The sun comes up Saturday at 7:18 in Portland the latest sunrise of the year, but is followed by a 6:20 sunrise the following day, much better for those of us who are early risers.

There is a very cool event that takes place Sunday morning and I will be up for it.  A partial eclipse will be visible at sunrise — about 6:30 a.m. local time — and last for about 45 minutes.  From Maine to  Boston and New York we will see the sun more anywhere from 45 to 50 percent covered by the moon.  The best place to see it will be where you have a clear shot of the eastern horizon.

Gardening this week

For me fall is a time of year I tend to cook more.  My cooking also changes somewhat as the garden is not producing as much and there are different things available in the stores.  With the heat of summer gone, I can make more stews and sauces that need to cook longer without the far of heating up the kitchen.   This week, my video shows how to make an easy tomato sauce that is sure to impress.
