HARPSWELL — Malcolm St. Clair Martin of Harpswell, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, Oct. 21, 2013.

Malcolm was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in Baldwin, Long Island. He graduated from Hofstra University and received his master’s degree at Adelphi University. After serving for a short time in the Army, Malcolm enjoyed a long career as a math teacher in the Commack (N.Y.) middle schools. While there he headed the math team.

Malcolm was an active member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Patchogue, N.Y., doing any job that needed to be done. For many years he also taught teens in the Sunday school class. Along with his wife, Cheryl, he was director of Adventure Unlimited, a youth group for Christian Science teens in Suffolk County, Long Island, for seven years. It was not unusual for Malcolm to coordinate taking a group of 25 to 50 teens skiing, mountain climbing, white-water rafting or biking. He wasn’t afraid to tackle anything the kids wanted to do and made sure that anyone that wanted to go got there.

Malcolm and his wife retired in 2000 to Harpswell. There he started his own landscaping business, was active in First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Brunswick, and became a devoted fan of the Bowdoin College women’s basketball and field hockey teams. It was not unusual for Malcolm to not only attend all home games, but away games as well, especially division playoffs and championship games. He knew all NESCAC stats and would happily share them with anyone willing to listen. He was very proud of his Bowdoin teams.

Malcolm loved to travel with his wife, Cheryl, and family friends. Many of his trips centered on his affinity for history, our national parks and his lifelong love affair with trains. He was never happier than when riding the rails with his wife and family friends.

Malcolm is survived by his devoted wife, Cheryl; his cousin, Karen Boeckmann of Huntington, Long Island; and many, many friends who consider him family.

A memorial service celebrating Malcolm’s rich life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Hilton Garden Inn, 5 Park St., Freeport. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Church of Christ, Scientist, Brunswick, ME 04011; or Harpswell Neck Fire Department, Harpswell Neck Road, Harpswell, ME 04079.
