ORONO — Maine officials, researchers and fishermen are gathering next weekend to discuss the invasive European green crab.

The University of Maine is hosting a summit on the effect the crab is having on the state’s coastal and marine resources on Saturday at the Wells Conference Center at the Orono campus.

The university hopes participants will be able to brainstorm how to control green crab as well as management and research ideas.

Paul Anderson, Maine Sea Grant director and marine extension program leader, says the crab has been in Maine for decades, but has recently proliferated to the point where it’s having serious impacts on things like the clam fishery.
