Heavy snow continues across southern Maine this evening with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.  As I look at what happened in southern New England this afternoon and move that into Maine you can expect most of the snow to occur until around 7PM or 8PM in Portland and through 11PM across the Capitol District.

From midnight through 5AM snow will continue in the mountains with some light mixed snow and rain or just all rain at the coast.  The snow will pile up in ski country, but won’t amount to anything at the coastline.

Try to shovel the snow in stages this evening as it will pile up very quickly and along the coast it is heavier than our past storms.

During the morning commute there may be a burst of snow along the coast, but the trend will be for clearing skies, blustery conditions and highs in the lower 30s.  Across the mountains the skiing will be spectacular with the only caveat being the wind.

Snowfall amounts remain lowest at the coast, especially along the Mid-Coast where, as expected milder air flowed north and has changed much of the snow to rain.

Friday and Saturday

Sunshine returns later tomorrow with a blustery breeze and chilly temperatures in the 30s.  Another big ocean storm will brush by  and bring some clouds and flurries or a period of light snow Saturday.   The best opportunity for accumulating snow will be right along the coast.  I’ll update the prospects for snow on Saturday tomorrow.

Sunday

The final day of the weekend is bright and sunny with highs only in the 20s.  It will be a good day to enjoy the new snow.  Skiing is going to be spectacular.

Next week.

There are still many indications of milder air later next week and I feel good about some melting especially by Thursday.  It also appears we could see more rain or snow before the mild air on Tuesday or Wednesday.   I don’t have high confidence in the long-range forecast right now as the atmosphere will be in transition.  I’ll update during this weekend.
