YORK COUNTY – Maine Water, which serves the communities of Biddeford, Saco and Old Orchard Beach, is asking residents in all its service areas to dig out fire hydrants in their neighborhoods if they have the time and ability to do so.

“We have more than 1,200 fire hydrants to clear every time it snows,” Judy Wallingford, president of Maine Water, said in a press release. “This is one of the toughest Maine winters in a very long time, and the parade of storms that has been hitting the state recently” has made it difficult for the company to ensure easy access to its hydrants.

Wallingford said Maine Water plays a crucial role in fire protection, helping towns and cities make sure that plenty of water under adequate pressure is always available to municipal fire departments.

Therefore, she added, “We (would) appreciate the help of any safety-minded citizen who takes the initiative, beats us to the punch and (shovels out a hydrant) before we can,” Wallingford said.

Maine Water serves a total of 32,000 customers in 20 communities throughout tMaine. See www.MaineWater.com for more information.
